peräsuolesta
Peräsuoli, also known as the rectum, is the final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus. It serves as a temporary storage site for feces before defecation. The peräsuoli is a muscular tube approximately 15 centimeters long in adults, located within the pelvis. It begins where the sigmoid colon ends and continues downwards. The inner lining of the peräsuoli consists of mucous membrane, which helps to lubricate the passage of stool. Muscular layers within the peräsuoli's wall contract to move feces towards the anus. The sensation of needing to defecate arises when the peräsuoli fills with stool, stretching its walls and stimulating nerve receptors. The voluntary muscles of the anal sphincter, located at the external opening, control the release of feces. The peräsuoli plays a crucial role in the digestive process by facilitating the elimination of waste products from the body. Disruptions to its function can lead to various medical conditions, including constipation, diarrhea, and fecal incontinence.
