These numbers, denoted by the symbol 'n', are positive integers starting from 1 (n=1, 2, 3, ...). Each principal quantum number corresponds to a specific electron shell or energy level within the atom. Higher values of 'n' indicate that the electron is further from the nucleus and possesses more energy.

The principal quantum number 'n' is the primary determinant of an electron's energy. While other quantum numbers (azimuthal, magnetic, and spin) refine the description of an electron's state, 'n' establishes the broad energy range. For instance, electrons in the n=1 shell are in the ground state and have the lowest possible energy.
