Peruskvanttimuuttujat, or principal quantum numbers, are fundamental concepts in quantum mechanics describing the energy levels of electrons in atoms. These numbers, denoted by the symbol 'n', are positive integers starting from 1 (n=1, 2, 3, ...). Each principal quantum number corresponds to a specific electron shell or energy level within the atom. Higher values of 'n' indicate that the electron is further from the nucleus and possesses more energy.

The principal quantum number 'n' is the primary determinant of an electron's energy. While other quantum numbers (azimuthal, magnetic, and spin) refine the description of an electron's state, 'n' establishes the broad energy range. For instance, electrons in the n=1 shell are in the ground state and have the lowest possible energy. Electrons in higher shells (n=2, n=3, etc.) are in excited states and have progressively greater energy.

The number of electrons that can occupy a given shell is also related to the principal quantum number. Specifically, the maximum number of electrons in a shell with principal quantum number 'n' is given by the formula 2n². Therefore, the first shell (n=1) can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, the second shell (n=2) can hold up to 8 electrons, and so on. This rule is crucial for understanding atomic structure and the periodic table of elements.
