peronaalnärvi
Peronealnärvi, also known as the common fibular nerve, is a crucial nerve in the lower leg. It branches off the sciatic nerve around the knee and then divides into two main branches: the superficial peroneal nerve and the deep peroneal nerve. This nerve is responsible for motor control of muscles in the front and sides of the lower leg, including those that allow for dorsiflexion (lifting the foot upwards) and eversion (turning the sole of the foot outwards). It also carries sensory information from the skin on the front of the lower leg and the top of the foot. Damage to the peroneal nerve can lead to a condition called foot drop, where an individual has difficulty lifting the front part of their foot. This can result from injury, compression, or certain medical conditions. Treatment for peroneal nerve issues often involves physical therapy, bracing, or in some cases, surgery. Understanding the anatomy and function of the peroneal nerve is important for diagnosing and managing a variety of lower limb neurological problems.
