Permafrostformed is a term used to describe land that has been shaped and altered by the presence and activity of permafrost. Permafrost is ground that remains frozen for two or more consecutive years. When permafrost thaws, it can lead to significant changes in the landscape. This thawing can cause the ground to subside, creating depressions called thermokarst lakes or bogs. The uneven thawing can also result in irregular surfaces with hummocks and hollows, a phenomenon known as patterned ground.
