percussionprimed
Percussionprimed refers to a method of igniting a firearm. In this system, a percussion cap, a small metal cup containing a sensitive explosive compound, is placed on a percussion nipple. The nipple is a hollow metal projection that connects the firing chamber to the outside. When the hammer of the firearm strikes the percussion cap, the impact crushes the explosive material inside, causing it to detonate. This detonation generates a flame that travels through the hollow nipple into the breech of the firearm, igniting the main propellant charge, such as gunpowder. This process then fires the projectile. Percussion priming largely replaced earlier flintlock ignition systems due to its greater reliability, especially in adverse weather conditions. It was a significant development in firearm technology during the 19th century and was widely adopted for military and civilian firearms. While largely superseded by self-contained metallic cartridges in modern firearms, the principle of igniting propellant through a sensitive primary explosive remains fundamental.
