pelkistämisreaktio
Pelkistämisreaktio, also known as reduction reaction, is a fundamental concept in chemistry that describes the gain of electrons by a substance. It is always paired with an oxidation reaction, where a substance loses electrons, forming a redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction. In a pelkistämisreaktio, the oxidation state of the atoms in the substance decreases. For example, when metal ions in solution are reduced to their metallic form, they gain electrons. Similarly, nonmetals can gain electrons to form negatively charged ions.
The term "pelkistäminen" literally translates to "reducing" in Finnish, reflecting the decrease in the oxidation state.
