In the participant as observer role, the researcher's role is known to the group, allowing for a more transparent approach to data collection.

Data is typically collected through detailed field notes, interviews, and the analysis of artifacts. Researchers strive to remain objective, acknowledging their own biases and how their presence might influence the group. This method is particularly useful for studying phenomena that are difficult to observe through surveys or experiments, such as subcultures, social movements, or the lived experiences of marginalized communities.
