Paranasal sinuses are air-filled cavities located within the bones of the skull, surrounding the nasal cavity. They are named after their proximity to the nasal passages and are lined with a mucous membrane that is continuous with the lining of the nose. The primary function of these sinuses is not fully understood, but it is believed they contribute to humidifying inhaled air, reducing the weight of the skull, and acting as resonating chambers for the voice.

There are four pairs of paranasal sinuses: the frontal sinuses, located in the frontal bone above the eyes; the maxillary sinuses, situated within the cheekbones below the eyes; the ethmoid sinuses, a complex network of small air cells located between the eyes; and the sphenoid sinuses, positioned deep within the skull behind the ethmoid sinuses. These sinuses are typically empty, containing only air.

Inflammation of the paranasal sinuses is known as sinusitis, a common condition that can be caused by infections, allergies, or structural abnormalities. When the sinus passages become blocked or inflamed, mucus can accumulate, leading to discomfort, pressure, and pain. This can affect breathing and sense of smell.
