Paralleelhübriidid are a type of hybrid vehicle powertrain configuration. In this setup, both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor can directly power the wheels, either independently or simultaneously. This means that at any given moment, the vehicle's propulsion can come from the gasoline engine alone, the electric motor alone, or a combination of both.

The key characteristic of a paralleelhübriid is this ability for both power sources to contribute to the drive torque at the wheels. This contrasts with series hybrids, where the internal combustion engine acts solely as a generator to charge the battery or power the electric motor, which in turn drives the wheels. In a parallel hybrid, the mechanical connection to the wheels is present for both the engine and the motor.

This architecture allows for flexible operation. At low speeds or during gentle acceleration, the electric motor can provide all the necessary power, leading to zero-emission operation and improved fuel efficiency. Under heavier loads or higher speeds, the internal combustion engine can take over or work in tandem with the electric motor to provide maximum performance. The control system of the vehicle intelligently manages the power flow between the engine, motor, and battery to optimize for efficiency, performance, and emissions according to driving conditions.
