Paperikoneissa is a Finnish term that translates to "paper machines" or "in paper machines." It refers to the large industrial equipment used in the papermaking process. These complex machines are responsible for transforming raw materials like wood pulp and recycled paper into finished paper products.

The fundamental operation of a paper machine involves several key stages. First, a dilute suspension of pulp fibers and water is spread onto a moving screen, often called a wire. Gravity and vacuum are used to dewater the pulp, allowing the fibers to interlock and form a wet web. This web then passes through a series of presses, which mechanically squeeze out more water and consolidate the sheet.

Following the pressing stage, the paper web enters the drying section. Here, it travels over a series of heated cylinders, evaporating the remaining moisture. The heat and pressure applied during drying also contribute to the paper's strength and surface properties. Finally, the dried paper may pass through calendering rolls, which smooth its surface and control its thickness and gloss.
