palmitoylates
Palmitoylates refers to the process of post-translational modification where a palmitoyl group is attached to a protein. This modification, also known as S-palmitoylation, involves the covalent linkage of palmitic acid, a saturated fatty acid, to a cysteine residue within the protein. The process is mediated by enzymes called palmitoyl acyltransferases (PATs). Palmitoylation is a dynamic and reversible modification, meaning the palmitoyl group can be added and removed. Enzymes that remove the palmitoyl group are called depalmitoylases (acyl-protein thioesterases or APTs). This dynamic nature allows for rapid regulation of protein function and localization.
The addition of a palmitoyl group can significantly alter the physical and functional properties of a protein.
