Palatium is a Latin noun meaning palace. In ancient Rome, palatium designates a grand residence of rulers and elites and, more specifically, the imperial residence built on and around the Palatine Hill. The word is the origin of the English term palace.

Etymology and scope: The term derives from Latin palatium, tied to the Palatine Hill, a central seat of power in Rome. In classical texts palatium could refer to the palace complex of an emperor or other high-status person, as well as the overall managerial or ceremonial precincts attached to a residence.
