Paléogéographie is the study of the geographical distribution of continents, oceans, and landforms throughout geological time. It seeks to reconstruct the Earth's surface as it existed in the past, often millions or even billions of years ago. This involves understanding how tectonic plates have moved, shaping the configuration of continents (continental drift) and the formation of mountain ranges, oceans, and basins.

The primary sources of information for palæogeographers include the fossil record, paleomagnetism, and geological evidence. Fossils, when found in different continents, can indicate past connections between landmasses. Paleomagnetic studies of rocks reveal the past orientation of the Earth's magnetic field, which can be used to determine the latitude and longitude of the rocks at the time they formed, thus tracking continental positions. Geological evidence, such as sedimentary rock sequences and evidence of ancient climates (e.g., glacial deposits in equatorial regions), also provides crucial clues.

By integrating these diverse lines of evidence, palæogeographers create maps that depict the arrangement of land and sea at specific points in Earth's history. These reconstructions are vital for understanding a wide range of geological and biological phenomena, including the evolution and distribution of life, the mechanisms of climate change over geological timescales, and the formation and location of mineral and hydrocarbon resources. It helps explain why certain fossils are found on widely separated continents and how ancient environments differed from those of today.
