A pakettijärjestelmä, often translated as a packet switching system, is a method of routing data in telecommunications networks. Instead of establishing a dedicated circuit for the entire duration of a communication, data is broken down into small, manageable units called packets. Each packet contains a portion of the data along with addressing information, specifying its source and destination.

These packets travel independently across the network, potentially taking different routes to reach their destination. Routers within the network examine the address information on each packet and forward it to the next hop. This dynamic routing allows for efficient utilization of network resources, as multiple communications can share the same network infrastructure simultaneously.

Once the packets arrive at their destination, they are reassembled in the correct order to reconstruct the original data. This packet-switching approach is fundamental to modern data networks, including the internet. Its advantages include flexibility, robustness, and cost-effectiveness compared to earlier circuit-switching methods, where a dedicated connection was maintained for the entire communication. The decentralized nature of packet routing also makes the network more resilient to failures, as packets can be rerouted around congested or unavailable links.
