A paisuntasäiliö, also known as an expansion tank or expansion vessel, is a crucial component in many closed-loop hydronic systems, particularly heating and chilled water systems. Its primary function is to safely accommodate the expansion and contraction of the system's fluid as its temperature changes.

Water, like most substances, expands when heated and contracts when cooled. In a sealed system, this change in volume would lead to a dangerous increase in pressure if not managed. The paisuntasäiliö provides a buffer space for this expanding fluid, preventing excessive pressure buildup that could damage system components such as pipes, pumps, and boilers. Conversely, as the fluid cools and contracts, the paisuntasäiliö ensures that the system maintains sufficient pressure to operate correctly, preventing issues like cavitation in pumps.

Typically, a paisuntasäiliö consists of a metal tank divided into two compartments by a flexible diaphragm or bladder. One side is connected to the heating or cooling system and contains the system fluid. The other side is pre-charged with air or nitrogen at a specific pressure. When the system fluid expands, it pushes against the diaphragm, compressing the air cushion. When the fluid contracts, the compressed air expands, pushing the fluid back into the system, thus maintaining stable pressure. The size of the paisuntasäiliö is calculated based on the system's water volume, temperature range, and desired operating pressure.
