Paikantimet is a term used in Finnish linguistics to refer to markers that encode location relative to a reference point. They include both bound morphemes such as affixes that attach to nouns or verbs, and independent words such as prepositions or postpositions found in analytic languages. They form part of spatial grammar and deixis, and they express static location (where something is) or directional information (where something is moving to or from).

In Finnish, locative marking is common on noun stems through case endings and postpositional forms. Examples include talossa meaning “in the house” (talo +ssa) and pöydällä meaning “on the table” (pöytä +llä). Movement toward a location uses illatives or directional forms such as taloon meaning “into the house.” The same concepts appear in other languages with different mechanisms, such as prepositions in English (in, on, at) or postpositions in other languages.

Paikantimet are studied in typology and semantics to distinguish locatives (static location) from directional locatives, and to analyze how they interact with demonstratives and other grammatical categories. They also interact with semantic fields like containment and contact, among others.

The term is often translated as “locatives” or “spatial case markers” in broader linguistic literature.
