The term covers different levels, notably perusopetuksen päättötodistus (completion of basic education) and lukion päättötodistus (completion of upper secondary school), as well as similar certificates issued after completing vocational or other formal education programs. The document is issued by the school or educational institution that awarded the qualification and is used as formal proof of education.

A päättötodistus typically includes the pupil’s or student’s full name, date of birth, the name of the issuing school, the level completed, and the period of study. It may state the completion status (for example, passed) and, depending on the level, may list final grades or key accomplishments. It is usually signed by the school principal or other authorized official and dated.

The document serves as evidence of having completed a particular education level and is commonly used in applications for further studies, training, or employment, as well as when moving between municipalities.
