Overflateerosjon describes the process where the Earth's surface is worn away by natural forces. This primarily involves the detachment and transport of soil and rock particles. The main agents responsible for surface erosion are water and wind, though ice and gravity also play significant roles.

Water erosion occurs when rain or melting snow flows over the land. This runoff can dislodge soil particles, leading to sheet erosion, where a thin layer of soil is removed uniformly. As water flow concentrates, it can carve out small channels called rills, and if these rills enlarge, they become gullies. Coastal erosion, a specific type of water erosion, is caused by the action of waves, tides, and currents on shorelines.

Wind erosion is prevalent in arid and semi-arid regions or areas with sparse vegetation. Strong winds can pick up and carry loose soil particles, a process known as deflation. This can result in sandblasting, where abrasive particles damage exposed surfaces.

Other forms of erosion include glacial erosion, where the movement of glaciers grinds and reshapes the land, and mass wasting, which involves the downslope movement of soil and rock due to gravity, such as landslides and rockfalls.

The rate of surface erosion is influenced by factors such as rainfall intensity, wind speed, soil type, topography, and the presence or absence of vegetation cover. Vegetation plays a crucial role in stabilizing soil and reducing erosion by intercepting rainfall, binding soil particles with roots, and reducing wind velocity at the surface.
