Overentanglement is a hypothetical phenomenon in quantum mechanics that describes a situation where a quantum system becomes entangled with an excessive number of other systems, potentially leading to complex and unpredictable behaviors. While entanglement itself is a well-established and experimentally verified property of quantum mechanics, the concept of "overentanglement" remains largely theoretical and is explored in the context of advanced quantum information processing and fundamental physics.

The idea arises from the combinatorial explosion of possible entanglement states in multi-particle systems. As the number of entangled particles increases, the complexity of their combined quantum state grows exponentially. This vast Hilbert space means that a truly random selection of a multi-particle quantum state is likely to be highly entangled, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as the "typicality of entanglement." Overentanglement, in this speculative sense, would represent states at the extreme end of this complexity, where almost every particle is maximally entangled with a significant portion of the others.

The implications of overentanglement are not fully understood.
