Outbreath is the exhalation of air from the lungs, typically occurring in conjunction with inhalation. During normal breathing, outbreath and inhalation occur in a cyclical manner, with outbreath following the contraction of the diaphragm and the subsequent relaxation of the chest cavity.

The process of outbreath begins when the diaphragm relaxes, allowing the chest cavity to expand. As the chest cavity widens, the lungs expand as well, allowing air to fill the alveoli, tiny air sacs located at the ends of the bronchioles. As the diaphragm continues to relax, the air pressure in the lungs decreases, allowing air to enter the nasal passages and into the lungs.

The air that is inhaled is then transported to the alveoli, where it is exchanged for waste gases, such as carbon dioxide. This process is facilitated by the thin walls of the alveoli, which allow oxygen to diffuse into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide to diffuse out.

Outbreath is an essential component of normal respiratory function, and is necessary for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide that occurs during respiration. During physical activity or other periods of increased demand for oxygen, the rate and volume of outbreath may increase to meet the body's needs. Conversely, during periods of reduced demand for oxygen, such as during sleep or periods of extended rest, the rate and volume of outbreath may decrease.
