They are characterized by their large, oval-shaped nuclei and are responsible for producing the protein keratin, which is a major component of the skin's protective barrier. Otsikkosolut are located in the stratum granulosum layer of the epidermis and play a crucial role in the skin's renewal process. They are also involved in the formation of lamellar granules, which contain antimicrobial peptides that help protect the skin from infections. The lifespan of otsikkosolut is relatively short, with new cells constantly replacing the old ones as the skin sheds and regenerates. This continuous turnover is essential for maintaining the skin's health and integrity. Otsikkosolut are also found in other stratified squamous epithelia, such as the oral mucosa and the esophagus, where they perform similar functions.
