Otolithischen refers to structures found in the inner ear of vertebrates, specifically within the vestibular system. These structures are critical for maintaining balance and sensing head movements. The term itself is derived from Greek words: "otos" meaning ear and "lithos" meaning stone.

The primary components of the otolithischen system are the otoliths, which are tiny calcium carbonate crystals. These crystals are embedded in a gelatinous membrane that covers sensory hair cells. When the head accelerates or tilts, gravity causes the otoliths to shift. This movement bends the hair cells, which then send signals to the brain via the vestibular nerve. These signals provide information about the position of the head relative to gravity and linear acceleration.

There are two main otolith organs in the inner ear: the saccule and the utricle. The saccule is primarily responsible for detecting vertical acceleration, such as during upward or downward movement. The utricle is more sensitive to horizontal acceleration and head tilting. Together, the saccule and utricle, along with the semicircular canals, form the vestibular system, which plays a crucial role in our sense of balance, spatial orientation, and the coordination of eye movements with head movements. Dysfunction of the otolithischen system can lead to symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness, and nausea.
