Osmolaalisuus is a measure of the concentration of solute particles in a solution. Specifically, it refers to the total number of osmotically active particles per kilogram of solvent. These osmotically active particles include ions and molecules that can contribute to osmotic pressure. Osmolaalisuus is typically expressed in units of osmoles per kilogram of solvent (Osm/kg).

The concept of osmolality is closely related to osmolarity, which measures the number of solute particles per liter of solution. While osmolarity is affected by the volume of the solution, osmolality is not. This makes osmolality a more accurate measure in biological contexts where water movement and solute concentrations are critical.

In biological systems, osmolality plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance and cell volume. For instance, the osmolality of bodily fluids, such as blood plasma and intracellular fluid, is tightly regulated by the kidneys. Deviations from normal osmolality can have significant physiological consequences.
