osculatie

Osculatie is a Dutch noun with multiple meanings. In everyday language it denotes the act of kissing; the verb is osculeren and the noun may refer to a kiss or to the act of kissing in social interaction. In mathematics and geometry, osculatie refers to a precise form of contact between curves or between a curve and a surface, characterized by agreement beyond a simple touch.

In plane geometry, two curves osculate at a point when they share a common point, a common tangent, and, typically, the same curvature. The most familiar example is the osculating circle: at a given point on a plane curve, there exists a circle that matches the curve’s position, tangent, and curvature there; its radius is the radius of curvature. For space curves, the osculating plane plays a similar role, being the plane that contains the curve’s tangent and principal normal vectors and provides second-order contact with the curve. The concept is formalized via the order of contact: if two objects agree in their Taylor expansions up to order two (or higher) at the point, they osculate.

Origin and terminology: the term derives from Latin osculum, “little kiss.” In mathematics it describes high-order contact; in everyday Dutch it denotes kissing.
