Orofaríngeas refers to the oropharynx, which is the part of the throat located behind the oral cavity. It extends from the soft palate down to the level of the hyoid bone. This anatomical region is a critical passageway for both air and food.

The oropharynx is lined with a mucous membrane and contains several important structures. These include the palatine tonsils, which are masses of lymphoid tissue playing a role in the immune system, and the lingual tonsils at the base of the tongue. The uvula, a fleshy extension of the soft palate, also hangs into the oropharynx.

Functionally, the oropharynx is involved in several processes. It participates in swallowing, where the muscles of the pharynx contract to propel food from the mouth into the esophagus. It also serves as a conduit for air traveling to and from the lungs. Infections and other medical conditions can affect the oropharynx, leading to symptoms such as sore throat or difficulty swallowing. Inflammation of this area is often referred to as oropharyngitis. Medical professionals may examine the oropharynx during a physical assessment to diagnose various conditions affecting the throat and surrounding structures.
