Organogenesis refers to the process by which organs are formed during embryonic development. It is a complex and highly regulated sequence of events that transforms simple, undifferentiated cells into the intricate structures and functional units of organs. This intricate process involves a series of cellular behaviors including cell division, cell differentiation, cell migration, cell adhesion, and programmed cell death (apoptosis).

The formation of organs begins with the establishment of distinct cell populations that have the potential to develop into specific tissues. These cells then interact with their environment and with each other, receiving and sending signals that guide their fate. For instance, during the formation of the nervous system, a specialized region of ectoderm undergoes invagination to form the neural tube, which will eventually develop into the brain and spinal cord. Similarly, the heart begins as a simple tube that undergoes looping and chamber formation to become a four-chambered organ.
