Optiken, known in English as optics, is the branch of physics that studies light and its interactions with matter. It covers how light is produced, propagates, is manipulated, and detected, and how these processes are harnessed for imaging, sensing, and communication. The field encompasses phenomena such as reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, polarization, and the behavior of light across different media and wavelengths.

Historically, optics emerged from ancient observations of vision and light. Early geometrical ideas by Euclid and later Arab scholars, such as Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen), laid the groundwork for systematic study. In the 17th and 18th centuries, geometrical optics explained image formation with lenses and mirrors, while wave theory, advanced by Huygens and Fresnel, described interference and diffraction. The 19th century brought electromagnetic theory, culminating in James Clerk Maxwell’s light as electromagnetic radiation. In the 20th century, quantum concepts introduced photons and quantum optics, linking classical and quantum descriptions of light.

Core concepts in optiken include geometrical optics, which treats light as rays to analyze lenses, prisms, and optical instruments; physical optics, which explains diffraction, interference, and polarization; and quantum optics, which focuses on light–matter interactions at the particle level and quantum states of light. Refractive index, dispersion, and optical coatings are practical considerations that affect imaging and transmission.

Applications of optics are wide-ranging and include vision correction with lenses and contact lenses, cameras and displays, fiber-optic communication, lasers, spectroscopy, medical imaging, and various sensing technologies. Ongoing research in optiken explores nanophotonics, metamaterials, and quantum information, continually expanding the role of light in science and technology.
