Ophiolites are fragments of oceanic crust and upper mantle that have been thrust onto continental crust. They represent slices of the Earth's seafloor that were once part of an ancient ocean basin, often formed at mid-ocean ridges. These geological formations are typically composed of a sequence of rocks that mimic the stratigraphy of the ocean floor, from the basal pillow lavas at the top to the gabbroic rocks below, and further down, the mantle peridotites.

The process by which ophiolites are formed involves tectonic plate convergence, where one oceanic plate is forced beneath another. In some cases, segments of this subducting oceanic lithosphere can become trapped and uplifted onto the overriding continental plate. This uplift usually occurs during continental collision events. Ophiolites are therefore valuable geological markers, providing direct evidence of past oceanic environments and the tectonic forces that shaped the Earth's crust.

Studying ophiolites is crucial for understanding plate tectonics, mantle processes, and the evolution of mountain belts. Their composition and structure offer insights into the conditions under which oceanic crust forms and deforms.
