Opery is the Polish term for operas—the musical-dramatic works in which most of the text is sung and which combine vocal music with orchestral accompaniment, staging, and scenery. The singular form is opera; opery refers to multiple operas. In Poland, operas are typically produced in opera houses or national theaters as part of a resident repertoire, sometimes in concert form.

Opera originated in late Renaissance Italy, where composers and librettists sought to revive and unify dramatic music. It developed through the Baroque and Classical periods and expanded in scale and expression during the Romantic era. Common types include opera seria and opera buffa in Italy, French grand opera, and German forms; many national traditions contributed their own styles. Over time, the repertoire broadened to include modern and experimental works.

Today operas are performed worldwide in historic and contemporary venues. Productions combine singing, orchestral music, acting, visual design, and often choreography. Performances are normally sung in the original language, with surtitles provided to translate the text for audiences. The repertoire spans centuries and languages, from Monteverdi to Puccini and Wagner, with continuing new commissions and festivals expanding the form. In Poland and elsewhere, opera remains a central cultural institution and educational resource.
