An oltár is a structure within a Catholic church or other Christian places of worship that serves as the focal point for religious services. It is the place where the Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, is celebrated. The term "oltár" originates from the Latin word "altare," meaning "high place."

Traditionally, altars are placed at the front of the sanctuary, the most sacred area of the church, facing the congregation. They are often elevated on a platform or steps. The design and materials of an altar can vary greatly depending on the architectural style and historical period of the church. Common materials include stone, marble, or wood.

The altar typically holds sacred objects necessary for the liturgy, such as the chalice (a cup for the wine), the paten (a plate for the bread), and the missal (the book containing the prayers of the Mass). During Mass, the priest officiates at the altar, performing the consecration of the bread and wine. The altar symbolizes Jesus Christ himself, the ultimate sacrifice, and the table where the faithful partake in his body and blood. In many churches, relics of saints may be embedded within the altar stone.
