Oldóhatás, in chemistry, refers to the process by which a solute dissolves in a solvent to form a homogeneous solution. This phenomenon is governed by the principle "like dissolves like," meaning that polar solvents tend to dissolve polar solutes, and nonpolar solvents dissolve nonpolar solutes. The interactions between solute and solvent molecules are crucial for dissolution. When a solute dissolves, the attractive forces between solvent molecules and solute particles must overcome the attractive forces between solute particles themselves and between solvent molecules themselves. If these new solute-solvent interactions are sufficiently strong, the solute will dissolve.

The extent to which a solute dissolves in a solvent is known as solubility, which is typically expressed as the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature and pressure.
