Oktanové refers to a chemical compound or a property related to the octane rating of fuel. Octane is a hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C8H18, existing as several isomers. The most common isomer is n-octane. In the context of fuels, particularly gasoline, "oktanové" relates to the octane number, a measure of a fuel's resistance to knocking or pinging during combustion in an internal combustion engine. A higher octane number indicates greater resistance to knocking.

The octane rating is determined by comparing the fuel's knocking characteristics to those of isooctane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane) and n-heptane. Isooctane is assigned an octane rating of 100, while n-heptane is assigned a rating of 0. A fuel with an octane rating of 95, for example, has the same knocking resistance as a mixture of 95% isooctane and 5% n-heptane. The octane rating is an important factor in determining the suitability of a gasoline for a particular engine. Engines designed for higher compression ratios typically require gasoline with a higher octane rating to prevent engine damage.
