Oksintaalirauhasissa, known in English as oxytocin glands or more precisely, the neurohypophysis, are a critical part of the endocrine system. These glands are not independent organs but rather the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. The neurohypophysis is composed of nervous tissue and is essentially a collection of nerve endings that originate from the hypothalamus. The hormones oxytocin and vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) are synthesized in the hypothalamus and then transported down the axons of these nerve cells to be stored and released from the neurohypophysis.

Oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone" or "cuddle chemical," plays a significant role in social bonding, reproduction, and childbirth. During labor, oxytocin is released in large quantities, stimulating uterine contractions to facilitate birth. It also plays a crucial role in lactation, triggering the milk let-down reflex in breastfeeding mothers. Beyond these physiological functions, oxytocin is involved in mediating feelings of trust, empathy, and pair bonding.

The release of hormones from the neurohypophysis is regulated by the hypothalamus, which responds to various internal and external stimuli. For instance, the physical stimulation of the cervix and uterus during childbirth, as well as the suckling of an infant, triggers the release of oxytocin. The neurohypophysis, therefore, acts as a storage and release site for hormones produced elsewhere in the brain, illustrating the intricate connection between the nervous and endocrine systems.
