Oksideerimised is a term used in Estonian-language chemistry to refer to oxidation processes. It denotes chemical reactions in which a substance increases its oxidation state, typically through loss of electrons and often through the incorporation of oxygen. In modern chemistry, oxidation is understood as part of redox reactions, involving paired oxidation and reduction steps. Oxidation states provide a bookkeeping method for electrons transferred between species, with oxidants accepting electrons and reductants donating them.

Oxidation can be spontaneous or catalyzed and may involve oxygen or other oxidants such as peroxides, halogens, or acids. Different contexts emphasize different aspects: chemical oxidation in synthesis and materials science; autoxidation of hydrocarbons; catalytic oxidation used to produce oxides or to convert feedstocks; and biological oxidation in metabolism, where cells extract energy from nutrients through electron transfer and oxygen consumption. Environmental chemistry studies the photochemical and atmospheric oxidation of pollutants, influencing air quality and climate processes.

Common oxidizing agents include molecular oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, chlorine, potassium permanganate, and various peracids. Oxidation can yield useful products—for example, alcohols are oxidized to aldehydes or carboxylic acids—or lead to undesired effects such as polymer degradation and rusting. In industry, controlled oxidation enables targeted chemical transformations, while uncontrolled oxidation can cause material aging, corrosion, and safety hazards.

Oksideerimised thus encompasses a broad range of phenomena in chemistry, biology, industry, and the environment. It is characterized by an increase in the focal substance’s oxidation state, often accompanied by energy changes and alterations in material properties.
