offunction
Offunction is a term used in philosophy of biology to denote a function that a trait currently performs but which was not the target of natural selection when the trait first evolved. In this usage, a trait can have multiple effects; the effect that explains the trait’s origin is sometimes called its proper function, while other effects that the trait happens to have may be described as offfunctions. The concept helps distinguish what a trait does now from why it arose.
Offfunctions are often discussed in relation to exaptation, spandrels, and other non-original uses of a trait.
