Anatomy: The oropharynx extends from the soft palate to the upper border of the epiglottis. Lateral walls are formed by the palatoglossal arches; the posterior wall contains mucosa and lymphoid tissue. It houses the palatine tonsils and the lingual tonsils and contributes to the base of the tongue and soft palate.
