Närviimpulss, also known as a nerve impulse, refers to the electrical signal transmitted along nerve fibers or neurons. It is fundamental to nervous system function, enabling communication between the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, as well as between neurons and other target cells such as muscles and glands.

A nerve impulse is generated when a neuron experiences a change in its membrane potential, typically caused by a stimulus that depolarizes the nerve cell membrane. This change triggers the opening of voltage-gated ion channels, primarily for sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+), leading to a rapid influx of sodium ions and a subsequent reversal of the electrical charge across the membrane. This process, known as depolarization, propagates along the axon as a wave of electrical excitation.

The conduction of nerve impulses is characterized by its all-or-none principle, meaning that once the depolarization reaches a critical threshold, the impulse propagates without decreasing in strength. After depolarization, the neuron undergoes repolarization, where potassium channels open to restore the resting membrane potential. The entire process is facilitated by the myelin sheath in some neurons, which insulates the axon and speeds up impulse transmission through saltatory conduction.

Nerve impulses play a crucial role in sensory perception, motor control, and the regulation of physiological processes. They are vital for reflex actions, voluntary movements, and the transmission of signals across neural networks involved in cognition, emotion, and homeostasis. Disorders of nerve impulse transmission, such as multiple sclerosis or peripheral neuropathy, can impair nervous system function and lead to various neurological symptoms.
