Nykytaide, or contemporary art, denotes art created in the present or recent past. In Finnish discourse it is distinguished from historical modernism and classical forms by its time frame and its willingness to experiment across media. Nykytaide encompasses a wide spectrum of practices and often engages with social, political or cultural questions.

Media used range from painting and sculpture to installation, video, performance, and digital or interactive works. Nykytaide often foregrounds conceptual inquiry, relational or participatory modes, and site-specificity, with curators and researchers shaping audience experience. It frequently addresses current social issues, identity, technology, environment, and power structures.

In Finland, key institutions promote and present nykytaide. Helsinki's Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and Espoo's EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art are major venues. Higher education and research are coordinated by Uniarts Helsinki, and national support comes from Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) and private foundations. Finnish artists regularly participate in international biennials and exhibitions, contributing to global dialogues while engaging with local communities.
