NykySuomen is a term used to describe the contemporary Finnish language as it is used in Finland today. It designates the standard, written and spoken form that has emerged from historical Finnish and the southern dialects, and is used in education, media, government and formal communication. The term is often used in linguistic discussions to distinguish modern Finnish from older stages of the language.

The modern standard is based largely on southern dialects around Helsinki and on the written tradition established in the 19th and 20th centuries. NykySuomen features extensive borrowing from English and other languages, the creation of new compounds, and a pragmatic approach to vocabulary in technology, business and online life. Grammar remains heavily inflected, but spoken usage shows simplifications and diversification of everyday speech. The writing system emphasizes stable spelling and punctuation norms.

In everyday life, NykySuomen coexists with regional dialects; it dominates official and media contexts, while dialects survive in rural areas and within communities. Among speakers, there is variation across age groups, urban versus rural settings, and professional communities. The rise of digital communication has accelerated neologism formation and semantic shifts.
