Nyirokszövetcsomók, also known as lymph nodes, are small, bean-shaped organs that are part of the lymphatic system. They are found throughout the body, clustered in areas such as the neck, armpits, and groin. The primary function of lymph nodes is to filter lymph fluid, a clear to yellowish liquid that circulates throughout the body, carrying waste products, foreign substances, and immune cells.

Within the lymph nodes, specialized immune cells, primarily lymphocytes (B cells and T cells) and macrophages, are present. These cells are responsible for identifying and destroying pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells that may have entered the lymph fluid. When the body is fighting an infection, the lymph nodes can swell as they become more active in producing immune cells and filtering out the infectious agents. This swelling is a common sign that the immune system is working.

Enlarged lymph nodes can also be a symptom of more serious conditions, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and various types of cancer. Medical professionals often examine lymph nodes to help diagnose and stage diseases. If a lymph node is significantly enlarged, or if it feels hard, fixed, or is accompanied by other symptoms like fever or unexplained weight loss, medical evaluation is recommended to determine the underlying cause. Biopsies of lymph nodes can provide crucial information for diagnosis.
