Within hosts and microbial communities, cross-feeding can stabilize ecosystems by supplying missing nutrients.

Measurement and study of nutrient transfer use techniques such as isotopic labeling, nutrient budgets, and tracer experiments to track the movement of elements through systems. Applications span agriculture to improve fertilizer efficiency, medicine to understand metabolism and nutrition-related diseases, and ecosystem science to model nutrient cycles. Limitations include variable bioavailability, competition among organisms, and regulatory controls that modulate uptake and distribution.
