Nukleinsyrs are essential biological macromolecules that play a crucial role in storing and transmitting genetic information. The two primary types of nucleic acids are deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). Both are polymers, meaning they are made up of repeating smaller units called nucleotides.

Each nucleotide consists of three components: a phosphate group, a five-carbon sugar (deoxyribose in DNA and ribose in RNA), and a nitrogenous base. The nitrogenous bases are adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T) in DNA, while RNA uses uracil (U) instead of thymine. The sequence of these bases along the nucleic acid chain encodes genetic instructions.

DNA typically exists as a double helix, with two complementary strands wound around each other. The bases on one strand pair specifically with bases on the other: A always pairs with T, and G always pairs with C. This complementary base pairing is fundamental to DNA replication, the process by which genetic information is copied. RNA, on the other hand, is usually single-stranded, though it can fold into complex three-dimensional structures.

RNA plays diverse roles in the cell, including messenger RNA (mRNA), which carries genetic code from DNA to ribosomes for protein synthesis; transfer RNA (tRNA), which brings amino acids to the ribosome; and ribosomal RNA (rRNA), which is a structural component of ribosomes. Viruses also utilize nucleic acids as their genetic material, either DNA or RNA, to infect host cells and propagate. The study of nucleic acids, known as molecular biology, is central to understanding life at the cellular and genetic level.
