Nozzle types refer to the various designs of a nozzle, which is a device that constricts the flow of a fluid and directs it, often to increase its velocity. The fundamental purpose of a nozzle is to convert fluid pressure energy into kinetic energy. Different nozzle designs are optimized for specific applications and fluid properties.

One common type is the convergent nozzle, which has a narrowing passage. This type accelerates subsonic fluid flow. A divergent nozzle, with an expanding passage, is used to accelerate supersonic flow. When a nozzle is designed with both a converging and a diverging section, it is known as a convergent-divergent (C-D) nozzle. These are crucial for achieving supersonic speeds, as the diverging section can further accelerate flow that has reached Mach 1 in the narrowest part, called the throat.

Other nozzle types include spray nozzles, which atomize liquids into fine droplets for applications like agriculture, painting, and firefighting. Flat fan nozzles create a wide, flat spray pattern, while cone nozzles produce a circular spray. Full cone nozzles deliver a uniform distribution of liquid across the entire cone, whereas hollow cone nozzles deliver liquid to the outer edge of the cone, leaving the center empty. Impingement nozzles use the impact of fluid streams to achieve mixing or cooling. The choice of nozzle type depends on factors such as desired flow rate, pressure, spray pattern, droplet size, and the properties of the fluid being handled.
