Nopeusmuutos, often translated as acceleration, is a fundamental concept in physics that describes the rate at which an object's velocity changes. Velocity itself is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude (speed) and direction. Therefore, a change in either speed or direction, or both, constitutes acceleration. In simpler terms, acceleration is how quickly something speeds up, slows down, or changes its path.

The standard unit for acceleration in the International System of Units (SI) is meters per second squared (m/s²). This unit reflects the definition: meters per second is a unit of velocity, and dividing that by seconds again gives the rate of change of velocity. Mathematically, acceleration is represented by the symbol 'a' and is calculated as the change in velocity (Δv) divided by the change in time (Δt): a = Δv / Δt.

Acceleration can be positive, meaning the velocity is increasing in the direction of motion, or negative, often referred to as deceleration, where the velocity is decreasing. An object moving at a constant speed in a straight line has zero acceleration. However, even if an object maintains a constant speed, if its direction of motion changes, it is still accelerating. For example, a car driving in a circle at a steady speed is accelerating because its velocity is continuously changing direction.
