nonarbuscular
Nonarbuscular refers to a characteristic within the field of mycology, specifically concerning symbiotic relationships between fungi and plants. It describes fungi that do not form arbuscules, which are specialized branched structures found within the root cells of plants. These arbuscules are a hallmark of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), a diverse group of fungi that form one of the most common and ecologically significant plant-fungal symbioses. In this symbiosis, the fungus colonizes the plant's root cells, forming arbuscules where nutrient exchange occurs. The plant provides carbohydrates to the fungus, and in return, the fungus enhances the plant's uptake of water and mineral nutrients, particularly phosphorus.
Fungi that are nonarbuscular, in contrast, establish symbiotic relationships with plants through different structures or mechanisms.
