Nitrogénfixációban refers to the process of nitrogen fixation in Hungarian. Nitrogen fixation is a crucial biogeochemical process that converts atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) into ammonia (NH3) or related nitrogenous compounds. Atmospheric nitrogen is abundant but largely unavailable to most organisms because of the strong triple bond between the two nitrogen atoms. This conversion is essential for life as nitrogen is a fundamental component of amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids like DNA and RNA.

There are several ways nitrogen fixation occurs. The most significant natural source is biological nitrogen fixation, carried out by a diverse group of prokaryotic microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea. These microbes possess the enzyme nitrogenase, which catalyzes the reduction of N2 to NH3. Some nitrogen-fixing bacteria live symbiotically with plants, such as Rhizobium bacteria in the root nodules of legumes, providing the plants with a readily usable source of nitrogen in exchange for carbohydrates and a protected environment. Other nitrogen-fixing bacteria are free-living in the soil or water.

In addition to biological fixation, atmospheric nitrogen can also be fixed through abiotic processes, primarily lightning. The high energy of lightning strikes can break the N2 molecule and allow it to react with oxygen to form nitrogen oxides, which then dissolve in rainwater and reach the soil as nitrates. Industrial processes, such as the Haber-Bosch process, also fix nitrogen synthetically to produce ammonia for fertilizers. This industrial fixation has significantly impacted global nitrogen cycles and agriculture.
