Nitrogenaser is not a widely recognized term in scientific literature. It is likely a misspelling or variant of nitrogenase, the enzyme complex responsible for biological nitrogen fixation. Nitrogenase catalyzes the reduction of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3) in certain bacteria, archaea, and symbiotic plant roots, enabling organisms to utilize atmospheric nitrogen for biosynthesis.

Biological role and reaction. Nitrogenase enables diazotrophic organisms to convert inert N2 gas into reactive nitrogen forms that can be integrated into amino acids, nucleotides, and other biomolecules. The overall process consumes energy in the form of ATP and proceeds through a sequence of electron transfer steps that add electrons and protons to N2, ultimately yielding NH3. A side reaction often produces hydrogen gas (H2). The enzyme is central to the global nitrogen cycle, supporting soil fertility and ecosystem productivity, particularly in nitrogen-poor environments.

Structure and cofactors. The most common form of nitrogenase is the molybdenum-iron (MoFe) nitrogenase, composed of two major protein components: the Fe protein (dinitrogenase reductase, encoded by nifH) and the MoFe protein (dinitrogenase, encoded by nifD and nifK). The MoFe protein contains the FeMo cofactor at its active site, where N2 binding and reduction occur. There are alternative nitrogenases that use vanadium or iron-only cofactors under certain conditions, but the Mo-containing form is most widespread and well characterized. The enzyme is highly sensitive to oxygen, which can irreversibly damage its metal cofactors.

Regulation and ecological context. Nitrogenase activity is tightly regulated in response to nitrogen availability and environmental cues. In free-living bacteria, regulation involves global nitrogen-sensing systems; in symbiotic relationships, hosts supply a protective environment to shield the enzyme from oxygen. Nitrogenase is a key driver of soil fertility, plant nutrition, and sustainable agriculture, influencing nitrogen inputs and ecosystem productivity.
