Nitrifikációra is the Hungarian term for nitrification, a crucial biological process in the nitrogen cycle. It involves the oxidation of ammonia to nitrite, followed by the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate. This transformation is primarily carried out by specific groups of microorganisms, mainly bacteria and archaea, which are collectively known as nitrifying bacteria.

The process typically occurs in two main steps. The first step is the conversion of ammonia (NH3) or ammonium (NH4+) to nitrite (NO2-), which is performed by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA). These organisms gain energy from this oxidation reaction. The second step is the conversion of nitrite (NO2-) to nitrate (NO3-), which is carried out by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Nitrate is a more stable form of nitrogen and is readily available for uptake by plants, making it essential for plant growth.

Nitrification plays a vital role in various ecosystems, including soil, aquatic environments, and wastewater treatment plants. In soils, it makes nitrogen available to plants, contributing to agricultural productivity. In aquatic systems, it helps remove toxic ammonia. In wastewater treatment, nitrifying bacteria are employed to convert ammonia from sewage into less harmful nitrates, which can then be further processed or removed.
