These processes involve the diffusion of nitrogen into the surface of the material, typically iron or steel, at elevated temperatures. The most common nitriding processes include gas nitriding, plasma nitriding, and ion nitriding.

Gas nitriding is the traditional method, where the workpiece is heated in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere, usually ammonia or a mixture of ammonia and nitrogen. Plasma nitriding uses a plasma generated by an electric arc or radio frequency to ionize the nitrogen gas, which then diffuses into the workpiece. Ion nitriding, also known as glow discharge nitriding, uses a low-pressure nitrogen plasma to bombard the workpiece with nitrogen ions, resulting in a more uniform and controlled diffusion process.

The depth and concentration of the nitrogen layer formed during nitriding depend on factors such as temperature, time, and the type of nitriding process used. The resulting compound layer, typically consisting of iron nitrides such as ε-iron nitride (Fe2-3N) and γ'-iron nitride (Fe4N), provides excellent hardness and wear resistance.
